Snoops: My Work is Never Done

Greetings Everyone. It’s me, Snoops, and I am very tired. I have been working around the clock to get Blondie back on her feet. Apparently she’s going back to work on Monday even though she still can’t put weight on her foot for another week. I have been with her for the past week making sure she got enough rest.

Onyx: You do realize she is MY humans, right?

Snoops: You deserted her for Mom’s bed with the wool blanket and bed warmer.

Onyx: I did not desert her. I’m the upstairs cat, remember? She’s the one who left me. Besides, I tried to see her, and you drove me off.

Snoops: You ignored her when she got home from the hospital.

Onyx: I waited for days upstairs, and she never came back. I finally decided to forgive her and went downstairs. But you were hogging my spot.

Snoops: It wasn’t your spot. Your spot is upstairs.

Sgt Stripes: Will you two please quit arguing. Everyone knows that Snoops rules the main floor.

Snoops: Thank you, Sarge.

Sgt Stripes: Of course you do get a little territorial sometimes.

Snoops: I’m a cat. We’re kinda known for that. You didn’t have any trouble forcing your way in.

Sgt Stripes: Blondie likes me a lot. I had to make sure she was safe when she was sleeping.

Snoops: You were sleeping too.

Sgt Stripes: It was really comfy with all the blankets. You slept a lot too.

Angel: You were both in the way. I couldn’t even get in to cuddle most of the time.

Snoops: What are you talking about? You never sleep with the humans.

Angel: I was just starting to.

Sgt Stripes: She’s right. She has been getting a little  cuddly with Blondie.

Angel: I was just getting used to laying in her lap when this happened. All of a sudden you guys took my spot, and I’ve been stuck laying on the ottoman.

Snoops: You know there are two other humans, right?

Angel: The male human is pretty attached to Sgt Stripes. And I just can’t get comfortable sitting with Human Mom, for some reason.

Gypsy: That’s because she likes me better.

Angel: No she doesn’t.

Gypsy: Yes, she does!

Snoops: Quit fighting! We’re supposed to be helping Blondie get better.

Angel: Then you need to do something with the little humans. They keep stepping on her foot or rolling over it.

Gypsy: I hate to agree with Angel, but she’s right. They should have gone to a kennel until Blondie was better.

Snoops: That’s an excellent idea. I wonder why the humans didn’t do it.

Sgt Stripes: Maybe it’s not too late. We still have another week before she’s healed enough to drive. Let me check with Mr. Google.

Snoops: Make sure the place takes Mom’s credit card.

Sgt Stripes: I kinda like the little blonde one. He always gives me treats.

Angel: That’s true. Besides, Blondie would miss them.

Onyx: Hey, Snoops. Are you going to keep sleeping with Blondie once she can go back upstairs?

Snoops: Nah. That’s too much work. You can have her back.

Onyx: Excellent. Hopefully it will be warm enough that I won’t need the bed warmer.

Sgt Stripes: I can help if you need me.

Snoops: Pawsome! One more week, and we should be back to normal.

Snoops: Tails from the Homefront

Greetings feline friends and others. It’s been awhile since we updated our continuing struggle to peacefully coexist. We had over a week of total peace and calm (no hissing, growling or swatting). Then Mom ruined everything by commenting on it. The past two days have been kinda rough.

Snoops: Sgt Stripes and I are living in harmony, more or less. But sometimes, he just seems so annoying that I have to growl at him.

Angel: I totally agree. There’s something. We just can’t put our paws on what the real problem is.

Sgt Stripes: The problem is that you ladies are hyper-sensitive. I don’t do anything, but I get growled at and have to avoid the whappy paw.

Snoops: You’re not totally innocent. You still try to chase us once in a while.

Sgt Stripes: A little exercise wouldn’t hurt you.

Snoops: Excuse me? A little exercise? You treat us like prey.

Sgt Stripes: It really gets your heart pumping. It’s good for you.

Snoops: I will exercise when and how I choose.

Gypsy: I get to watch all the action. I pretty much get along with everyone.

Snoops: I like you well enough, but you have really weird sleeping habits.

Gypsy: What do you mean?

Snoops: You find a spot, and it’s like you’re glued to it. You only move to eat and use the litter box.

Gypsy: So what? You have favorite spots.

Snoops: Yeah. But my favorite spots are always my favorite spots. You choose a place, won’t move for a few weeks, then find a new favorite spot that you won’t leave. And you never go back to the previous favorite spots.

Gypsy: I keep looking for the perfect spot.

Angel: A perfect spot doesn’t exist. The small humans have free run of the house.

Sgt Stripes: I like the small blonde one. He gives out excellent treats.

Snoops: And lots of them.

Gypsy: But they are really loud.

Angel: I wonder if they have a volume control. Like the television.

Gypsy: That would be excellent.

Snoops: Did you notice Blondie has invaded our space on the first floor?

Angel: I did. She’s taken over the good spot on the sofa.

Snoops: Yeah. She can’t walk for a couple of weeks.

Sgt Stripes: Does she have a bad paw?

Snoops: She’s a human. She doesn’t have paws. But if she did, it would be one of the back paws. She had something similar 10 years ago. Can you believe how cute I still look on her scooter?

Angel: That is pretty cool.

Gypsy: Where’s her cat?

Onyx: You mean me? I’m still hanging out upstairs. I’m the Empress of the Night.

Gypsy: Shouldn’t you be with your human?

Onyx: I stayed with her all last summer when she was depressed. I’m sitting this one out. She’ll be back upstairs in a couple of weeks. She has plenty of cats downstairs.

Gypsy: That seems kinda harsh.

Onyx: Snoops told me about the importance of having a back-up human in case something happens to your primary human. And I found a great wool blanket in Mom’a room. I’m going to hang out here until Blondie comes back up.

Sgt Stripes: Sounds like the rest of us will have to take turns watching Blondie.

Angel: Yeah. She has to get better so we get the living room back.

Free Range Cats

Snoops: Quiet down, everyone. I called this meeting of the Cat Council to figure out what we’re going to do with this week’s blog post.

Sgt Stripes: What does Mom want to do?

Snoops: That’s the problem. She’s been so busy watching the little humans for the past couple of weeks that I think she might have broken her brain.

Onyx: How do you break your brain? Is it permanent?

Snoops: I think it’s just an expression for when humans get really tired and don’t want to think anymore.

Sgt Stripes: Maybe we could write about how mean the lady cats are to me. All I want to do is play.

Angel: I thought that was going to get better when you got to come downstairs.

Sgt Stripes: I did too. The humans told me that you were a nice kitty. But you hiss at me every time I walk by.

Angel: Not every time. Some times I ignore you.

Sgt Stripes: I really wanted to be able to roam the whole house. But it’s really not working out the way I thought it would. I thought it was going to be great with all the extra space.

Snoops: It is kind of weird how it’s working out. Only three of us are even moving between the upstairs and downstairs.

Gypsy: I really like it upstairs. It’s more space than I’ve ever had. I don’t see any reason to go exploring. I have everything I need up there.

Angel: And I feel the same way about being downstairs. Everything I might need is on one floor.

Onyx: You guys should really move around more. I love being able to sleep on one of the beds upstairs and then go downstairs and roam around. There are a lot of places to jump.

Sgt Stripes: Onyx is right. The really good jumping opportunities are downstairs.

Gypsy: I have plenty of spots to jump onto upstairs. I feel much more secure staying upstairs right now. Maybe I’ll go downstairs at some point, but I’m happy with the way things are.

Snoops: The part that really bugs me is how messed up the feeding schedule is. I know that Mom still serves the wet food before she goes to work, but sometimes I’m still in the basement because there’s a crowd.

Angel: She’s right. That big tabby cat is always lying in the kitchen.

Snoops: And he doesn’t even like wet food.

Sgt Stripes: I want to make sure I don’t miss out on anything. The kitchen is the center of everything that happens in the morning.

Snoops: Our household is not that exciting. What do you think you might miss?

Sgt Stripes: I don’t know, but something good might happen. And I want to be in the center of all the good stuff.

Snoops: Treats have gotten really messed up. It used to be that Sarge and I both got treats in the morning.

Sgt Stripes: Yeah, but those Belleville cats want treats all the time. Onyx even knows how to open all of the containers.

Onyx: I always share the bounty with you.

Sgt Stripes: That’s true. I can’t complain about that. But I wish you liked other flavors. Creamy dairy is getting old.

Gypsy: You shouldn’t complain. Since you’re getting your treats downstairs, the humans forget about me sometimes.

Angel: That’s terrible! Maybe Onyx can teach you how to get your own..

Gypsy: Ooh. That’s a good idea!

Sgt Stripes: Sometimes I get double treats. One time with Snoops and one time with Onyx.

Onyx: Yeah. Mom isn’t very good about keeping track of when we get treats. We can usually get them twice a day if she’s really busy.

Snoops: That reminds me. Mom is pretty upset that no one is sleeping with her now that we can go wherever we want. She says she’s getting lonely.

Sgt Stripes: Why don’t you sleep with her?

Snoops: I don’t really go upstairs in the hot weather. What about you?

Sgt Stripes: I prefer to watch out the window. I want to keep everyone safe.

Angel: We’re all getting used to the new set-up. I bet Mom will have company when it gets colder.

The cats all nod and decide that life is pretty good.

Sgt Stipes: Time for a kibble break.

Gypsy Katt: Front and Center

Hello. I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Gypsy Katt. I go by Gypsy, although Mom has called me Gypsy Rose a few times. I moved here with my other human Mom and the two little humans. Originally, I was staying in the sun room with my sister Angel. But Angel kept eating all of the food and I lost a lot of weight.

The humans got worried and decided to bring me upstairs to live with Onyx (my other sister) and Sgt Stripes. At my other house, I was kept separate from the other kitties because they thought I was too territorial. Here I can roam around the entire floor. Sgt Stripes and I get into the occasional tiff, but nothing major.

I really like it here. There are four adult beds plus two toddler beds and only three cats. Nobody tries to eat my food. Mom (the one who lived here before) lets me sleep with her at night. Sgt Stripes and I share the kibble bowl and fountain. Onyx kinda keeps to herself. This is the best place I’ve ever been.

When I moved in, there were two downstairs cats: Snoops and Kommando Kitty. As you know, Kommando went over the Rainbow Bridge last month. Apparently, the original set-up was the Snoops bonded to the older male human, and Kommando bonded with Mom. Now, unfortunately, the older male human and Kommando are gone. Snoops is now Senior Cat in the house, so all the hmans give her cuddles and pets. But Mom’s pretty sad about what happened to Kommando.

So I decided that since I don’t have a human, and she doesn’t have a cat, I should apply for the position of primary cat to Mom. I checked with my old Mom, and she said that she was pretty bonded with Onyx. So I asked Snoops how I would go about becoming Mom’s new cat. (Don’t worry about Sgt Stripes; he’s connected with the other male human here – his human brother. And Angel’s buddies with the little humans.)

Snoops wasn’t really sure how humans and cats bonded; it just seemed to happen. But she gave me some questions to see if it might be a good fit.

What is the #1 house rule? I know this one! No eating family members. Apparently this also applies to using teeth when playing.

How much time each day do you spend cuddling with your current human? I never really had my own human. I like to lie next to Mom when she’s reading in bed or using her computer. I don’t have much experience as a lap cat, but I’m trying to get used to it.

How do you feel about human snuggles and hugs? Umm. I wasn’t really hugged before. It seemed a little uncomfortable the first time I was hugged. Mom called it “kitty cuddles”. I wasn’t really a fan. I could probably learn to live with it.

What time does your day usually start? I like getting up with the sun. Mom usually gets up at 6a for work, so I’m trying to adapt to that. It’s weird, though. Apparently, there are days when she doesn’t have to work and sleeps later. I think I have a better alarm system. My tummy wants food at the same time every day. We’re working on a compromise.

When do you sleep at night? I really love having a regular bed. I go to sleep when Mom goes to sleep. She has a tummy warmer (she calls it a bed warmer). Sgt Stripes and I love the tummy warmer at night.. I usually don’t move much at night.

What kinds of human food do you like? I don’t think I’ve had human food. But I really like cat food with fish and chicken, so I would probably like that.

Why do you think you’re the best candidate for this job? I’ve never really had a human, so I don’t have any bad habits to break. I think I could get better at the cuddling stuff with some practice. There’s a human with no cat and a cat with no human. It just makes sense.

Snoops said that she would present my answers to Mom and let me know what she says. Keep your fingers crossed for me,

Cats and Spring Fever

It’s been a very weird winter here in Southeast Michigan. The humans here have hardly complained about the weather at all. Not much snow and warmer than usual temperatures for the most part. It doesn’t really matter all that much to us cats, although no melted snow on the carpeting has been nice.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t been warm enough for the humans to hang out outside, so we’ve been cooped up with the toddlers for weeks. I think they might be getting on everyone’s nerves. Mom’s been talking about something called Spring Fever. We thought she was just making up a name for being grumpy, so we looked it up on Mr Google.

Turns out it’s really a thing that some humans get. The symptoms are:

  • Feeling energetic – That would be a good thing. More playtime for us and earlier breakfast on the weekends
  • Sleeping less – More time for cuddles.
  • Eating lighter – Hmm. We hope that doesn’t mean less meat. Most of the rest of what she eats is disgusting.
  • Smiling and happy feelings – That would be a nice change. She’s been kinda grumpy lately.
  • Desire to get in shape – Don’t really see that happening.
  • Feeling of romance – Better not happen. There’s already too many humans around here.
  • Taking up new hobbies – Maybe she could learn how to make homemade cat food. That would be cool
  • Scatterbrained and unfocused – Not sure we’d be able to tell.
  • Urge to spring clean – Doesn’t really sound like her.
  • Sense of Claustrophobia – Why would she want to leave the house? We’re in it.

Okay. It might not be a bad thing if Mom got Spring Fever. Then we began to wonder if we could get Spring Fever too. Of course, since humans are so fascinated with us kitties, some have studied this. And we can get Spring Fever!

It’s a little different in cats than in humans. Here are our top common behaviors when the weather gets warmer:

Increased Activity – Generally speaking, we become more active and energetic in the spring. We are more prone to zoomies. And we like to spend more time playing and exploring. Part of that may be because there is more sunlight. And warmer temperatures mean we don’t have to spend energy keeping warm.

Interest in the Outdoors – Even us indoor cats enjoy the outdoors more in the spring. There’s more stuff to look at out the windows. And spring is the beginning of catio season. Some of us kitties even like to go out on leashes or harnesses. (In our neighborhood, it’s not safe to be outside alone. The road is busy and we have coyotes and raptors.)

Increased Grooming – Most of us do more grooming in the spring. We have to clean up the loose furs from losing our winter coats. And we want our warm-weather fur to look spiffy.

Vocalization – Some kitties like to talk more in the warmer weather. We’re just so excited to see the world coming back to life outside.

Playfulness – We generally feel more energetic in the sun than in the cold gloom of winter. Pouncing is a lot more popular this time of year. We also sometimes want more attention from our humans. Mom says she’s not sure she has more attention to give. We’ll have to test her.

Territorial Behavior – New season, time to re-establish boundaries. We may increase our scratching and rubbing against objects. Some of our less well-mannered brethren may even spray to mark their territory. We would like to remind them that it is really only acceptable as an outside activity. We prefer the tactic of taking a spot and refusing to move.

Changes in Eating Habits – All that increased activity can lead to an increased appetite. And the sight of prey outside can make us hungry too (even if we can’t get out to eat it).

We admit that we have never paid enough attention to tell whether we get Spring Fever? Have any of you experienced it?

Fall Back and Get Ready for Nap Time

Greetings fellow felines! This week is the end of Daylight Savings time here in the US. It’s the final sign that fall has fallen. If you’re like us, winter is the time for snuggling on electric blankets and hanging out on the humans. We thought we’d share some interesting stuff we found out about cats and sleep.

Cats sleep for about 2/3 of our lives – Young cats sleep about 16 hours each day, and older cats sleep up to 20 hours per day. Our main activity as wild cats was hunting which takes a LOT of energy. So we adapted to spend a lot of time storing up energy for the hunt and recovering from it.

Cats can snore – One of the previous cats here snored so loud, the humans could hear her across the room. Some breeds are more likely to snore (e.g., Persians, Himalayans), but a lot of times it just depends on the position we choose to sleep in. If our airway becomes partially blocked by our soft palate, we will snore. Generally, if we are snoring, we are really relaxed.

Cat experience REM sleep similarly to humans – REM stands for rapid eye movement, and it’s named that because of the way our eyes move behind our eyelids. It happens when we are in deep sleep. And it is a sign that we are dreaming. A lot of times our eyes and ears will twitch when we are in REM sleep. Studies have shown that we dream about 30-40% of the time we are asleep.

The weather can affect how much we sleep – Cats generally sleep more on wet, dreary days. Of course, there’s not much else to do when the weather is yucky.

Cats can go partially to sleep – We are far enough asleep to get rested, but alert enough to notice smells or sounds. When we’re in this state, we can wake up almost instantly to get away from danger. And of course, we are able to fall asleep easily in almost any circumstance. We can even sleep with our eyes open! (Or partially open.)

We sleep in a variety of positions:

The crescent – This is the most common position for kitties. You curl up on one side with your head bent towards your feet and your tail tucked in. It protects your tummy and keeps you warm. Because you feel safe, you can enjoy a nice, deep sleep. If we get too hot, we may relax a little and just sleep on our sides with our paws more relaxed.

Sheltered – Every cat loves a good box. Or drawer. Or nest of blankets or sweaters. We like sleeping in sheltered spaces because it keeps us safe from predators. Or toddlers.

Tummy Up – A cat who sleeps tummy up is a happy cat. You’re exposing your most vulnerable spots, so you trust your surroundings and are fully relaxed. Cats are more likely to sleep this way in the summer because it is a good way to cool down.

Loaf-Shape – We’ve all turned ourselves into a loaf at times. You’re upright with your paws and tail tucked it. It’s an excellent way to conserve heat in cold weather. It’s also good for protecting your vulnerable spots and being able to spring into action at a moment’s notice if there’s a threat.

Pretzel-Like – You know the position. You’re kinda  twisty with your paws going different ways. Cats do it when we’re relaxed. Your tummy is usually exposed and it’s hard to move quickly out of it. Humans think we’re super cute because they can’t bend that way.

Hiding our Face with Our Paws – We sleep like this to protect our eyes and nose. It also keeps out noise and light. It’s really comfortable. And we look really cute sleeping this way.

Sitting Up/Laying Flat – Yep. We can sleep in a sitting position. And laying flat on our stomachs. And pretty much any position in between. And we’re comfortable. Humans are very jealous of this trait.

Cuddle Puddle – A lot of like to sleep with fur siblings or humans. If we’re willing to sleep with someone, it’s a sign of deep trust and affection. Of course, sometimes, we sleep with others to stay warm.

Having said all of this, we are off to find a good spot to relax.

We’ve Been Invaded Again!

Sgt Stripes here. My sisters and I are not happy cats. The two small humans are visiting, and we are not impressed.

Kommando: They arrived Thursday. And they have got so much stuff. It’s everywhere.

Snoops: Yeah. And there isn’t anything good this time. Apparently they’re too big for carriers and special chairs.

Kommando: But they are really loud.

Snoops: They smell kinda weird. And the stuff they drink smells kinda weird too.

Sgt Stripes: They sleep upstairs with me. It takes a long time for them to go to sleep. And they make a LOT of noise.

Kommando: They tried to eat our food. Mom forgot to take our kibble off the floor, and they ate it when she wasn’t looking.

Sgt Stripes: At least you got food. Mom was so tired last night that she forgot to feed me. It was horrible.

Snoops: You should have told her.

Sgt Stripes: I tried. I couldn’t get her or my human brother to wake up. I even tried nibbling on her arm. I thought I was going to starve.

Kommando: Did she finally remember?

Sgt Stripes: Not really. After she fed you guys Friday morning and came back upstairs, I cried and led her to my room. She finally got the message. I think it’s my worst night since I’ve been here.

Snoops: That is awful. She came down early to feed us so the little humans couldn’t get into our food.

Sgt Stripes: It’s a good thing she did. By the time she got back upstairs, the little one was crying. She put him on her bed. In my place!!

Snoops: You lost your spot?

Sgt Stripes: I jumped up on the bed after I ate like I always do when Mom’s home, and he was there! I had to get back down. I think he wanted to touch me.

Kommando: Yep. That’s exactly the same thing that happened to me later. I went to jump up in Mom’s lap, and the other one was there. It’s terrible!

Snoops: They have cats at their house, so they think they can touch us. We need to stay out of the way. No sticky fingers in my beautiful fur.

Kommando: I hope they’re not moving in.

Sgt Stripes: I heard Mom say it’s for three nights.

Kommando: Hmm. Nobody asked us.

Snoops: We better be getting lots of treats at the end of this.

What’s Worse Than a New Cat in the House?

Cute Photos of Cats and Babies Sure to Steal Your Heart

Greetings, everyone. We, Snoops and Kommando Kitty, are welcoming our new brother Sgt Stripes to the blog because we are all in a terrible situation this weekend. We have been overrun by two small (13 months and 2 years), loud children. And we are not happy.

Snoops here. They arrived Thursday, and nothing seemed out of place. Our human sister brings them over once in a while. They stick around for a few hours, make a lot of noise, smell weird, and then go home. Then our sister and her husband left, but the rugrats stayed. I was pleasant and didn’t run away, but one of them tried to touch me. I am now watching from a distance.

Sgt Stripes reporting. I had a terrible night. The way it usually works is that I have the run of the upstairs house during the day. Then the humans spend time with me at night before I go to my room and Kommando (and maybe Snoops) sleeps with Mom. Last night, they brought up these two creatures. I’ve never seen anything like them before. I guess they’re miniature humans. But the one tried to CHASE me.

Cats That Think They Are The Masters At Hiding - I Can Has Cheezburger?

I was terrified. I love cuddling with the big humans, and have no problem letting them pick me up. But this creature was trying to grab me! And he was making a lot of noise. I hid under the bed. Later, the bigger one started crying. A lot. There was no way I was coming out. After they were finally asleep, the humans coaxed me out. But I refused to go in my room. That’s where they tried to grab me. At least they slept for a long time. They went back downstairs in the morning. But I think they’ll be back tonight.

Kommando here. Today was even worse than yesterday. Mom had them in the kitchen while she was doing the dishes. The little one unplugged our fountain and dumped the water. Mom didn’t think he could get to the cord. Now we have to drink out of a bowl until they leave. Our kibble and wet food can’t sit on the floor right now either unless we are being fed. One of them tried to eat it. When the little humans visit, their parents usually put a fence in place to keep them out of the kitchen. But the fence keeps me out too. (I’m not really a jumper.)

I tried to get cuddles while Mom was watching TV. But that little human was on the sofa with her. And he PETTED me. It was very traumatic. Now I’m with Snoops watching them from a distance.

Lolcats - tail - LOL at Funny Cat Memes - Funny cat pictures with words on them - lol | cat memes | funny cats | funny cat pictures with words on

We’re not sure how long they’re staying. Mom says a couple more days. That is a long time. Our eating is messed up. And our bedtime routines are scrambled. Mom says they’re trying to be friendly because they have kitties of their own. We’ve heard stories that our cousins Angel and Thunder even let them touch their tails. Not gonna happen here.

We don’t have much experience with small humans, but they smell even worse than big humans. Maybe because they’re down here on the ground with us. And sometimes they make a lot of noise. Mom tries to keep them quiet and entertained, but sometimes it doesn’t work and they cry. Really loud.

We thought it was tough trying to get used to other cats. This is a whole different animal.

Cat Forum: Cats and the Heat

35+] Summer Cat Wallpaper Images on WallpaperSafari

Greetings fellow felines. We’re here to talk about the heat. You would think that with as much as we all love to curl up with an electric blanket in the cooler weather that summer would be a breeze for us cats. After all, we do adore sun puddles. But there’s warm, and then there’s the ridiculous heat that comes around this time of year.

It’s time to call out your primordial cat and make sure you’re following your instincts regarding the heat. This is no time to go “doggo” and start exercising with your human.

26 Cats Who Are Getting Cozy In The ... Sink? – Meowingtons

Conserve your energy. Sleep when it’s hot; prowl when it’s cooler. Nothing interesting happens in the heat of the day anyway – everything else is avoiding the sun too. It’s the perfect excuse for taking longer naps.

Sleep someplace cool. Tile floors are great in the summer. They stay cooler and don’t retain heat. Sinks work well if you want to avoid being stepped on. Try to avoid the rooms with big, open windows that let in a lot of sun. You don’t want to sleep in those intense sun puddles either.

Cat Drinking Fountain

Groom yourself. As the saliva dries, it will help cool you down,

Hydrate. Drink water whenever you get the chance. You’re thirstier in the heat, and drinking cool water will help you cool down.

Is It Safe To Put Ice In A Cat's Water? | Purr Craze

You also need to talk to your human about things they can do to help you deal with the heat:

Make ice toys. We like to play with ice cubes. They slide nicely and are fun to pounce on. They also help to keep our paws cool. (In case you didn’t know, paws are where we gain and lose heat.)

Cooling mats. If your house is really hot, or if you get overheated easily, a cooling mat is a great idea. Your human can buy one or make their own out of freezer blocks and a thick blanket (don’t let them get the really cold stuff next to your fur/skin). In an emergency, a package of frozen vegetables will work.

Caturday Pootie Diary: Fur Couture

Wet towel. If you’re feeling extra warm, your human can help by wetting your fur with a towel or their hands. It will feel really good as the water evaporates. At the least, dampening your paws will offer quick relief.

Brushing. Our fur coat helps to regulate our temperatures, but loose furs just make us hot. Getting brushed daily helps keep us as cool as possible.

Catster Quiz: Is Your Cat a Hot Mess? - Catster

Watch for signs of overheating. Heavy panting and loss of energy are early signs that we are too hot. Agitation, rapid breathing, skin that is hot to the touch, drooling and vomiting may be signs of heatstroke and are a medical emergency. You need to see a vet.

Multiple sources of water. It is a good idea to have lots of water available in extremely hot weather. Adding ice cubes can help keep it cool. It is especially important to have water available outside this time of year.

Most interesting cat in the attic. : MostInterestingCats

Provide sunscreen. It’s best if you stay inside between 11 am and 3 pm when the sun is the strongest. If you need to be outside, your human can provide sunscreen (feline variety, not human) if you are one of our pale-colored or sparsely-furred kin. Your ears and nose are particularly susceptible to getting burnt. Warning sign that requires a trip to the vet for an outdoor or indoor/outdoor cat: crusty, scaly, or sore-looking skin.

Keep poorly ventilated rooms closed. This isn’t a good time of year to be exploring the attic or the space behind the refrigerator. If you do get caught someplace hot, make sure you drink plenty of water when you get out. And let your human know if you don’t feel well.

Finally, talk to your humans about helping any stray/feral cats who may be around. If possible, offer a shady spot and fresh water. Plastic bowls are better than metal ones because they don’t get as hot and won’t burn if the cat touches it. (Metal is also not recommended in the winter because the cat’s tongue can freeze to it.)

Now that you know how to stay comfy, have a pawsome summer! And send your human out for a mouse-sicle to enjoy.

Broken Routine –> Chaos

Everyone knows that we cats love our routines. Ours wasn’t perfect, but we were content. Now Mom has ruined it. She’s having an attack of some kind of nerve condition that won’t let her eat or talk. If she can’t eat, she can’t work. (We know. Usually people say they have to work to eat. She’s weird.)

She works overnight, so she’d feed us when she got home. No worries, right? She’s home, so the feeding stays the same. Wrong, She sleeps different hours now because of the medicine she’s taking, so no one can keep track of breakfast time. We’re pretty sure she’s trying to skimp on us though.

After we ate, the three of us would hang out on the sofa for a couple of hours while she did computer stuff. Then we’d all go up to bed. Now she can’t lie flat, so she has to sleep on the sofa. She’s downstairs ALL THE TIME. We’ve lost all our bed-warmer time. And the three of us can’t sleep comfortably on the sofa.

Our human brother would make dinner. Mom says he’s a really good cook. We’re not sure what she’s using to measure that. When Mom cooked we got to share meat and fish. He cooks with something called lentils a lot. They are NOT meat or fish. He uses quite a bit of chicken. But he cooks it in weird stuff.

It’s gotten worse since Mom can’t eat. It’s all mushy, soupy stuff. And the chicken is too small to pick out. More proof we’re starving because she can’t eat.

After dinner, the three of us would take a nap before she went to work. Now she goes back to the sofa and plays on her computer.

Our lives are a mess!

Ed. Note: Cat’s having an attack of trigeminal neuritis. It’s nothing serious despite the cats’ feelings about their situation.
